Letters from sailors who served in the Civil War, 1860-1874.

Letters, 1860-1874 (most dating from the Civil War), written by sailors to Thoms and his wife Isabella. Many, if not all, of the writers, were probably graduates of Thoms's New York Nautical School. The letters are mostly concerned with personal and religious matters, such as prayer meetings on board ship, thanks for gifts of newspapers and tracts, and requests for money and practical help; however, they include eyewitness accounts of the Battle of Antietam, and of the attack on the U.S.S. Richmond on October 12, 1861.
